President's note
Jenny Yuen has been teaching music lessons since 2014. As she began teaching she noticed a growing disparity within the community among those who had access to piano lessons. To proactively address this issue, in 2015, she started Heart of the City Piano Program Calgary.Â
"Empowering students through the language of music is so powerful! Music has always been a big part of my life. Through piano lessons, I discovered some of life's greatest lessons such as patience and the value of hard work. I started HCPP Calgary because I would like to be able to offer this same luxury to all youth, in a more accessible way."Â
Volunteer coordinator's note
Sofia Maruschak-Love completed her Grade 8 RCM and Advanced theory exams following over 10 years of piano lessons and continues to mentor others to find their love of music. Sofia partnered with Jenny to facilitate the transition of HCPP into a non-profit organization and feels privileged to help students discover piano who otherwise would not have access to lessons.
"I am so grateful to have been able to learn the piano and believe it helped shape me into the person I am today. I believe all students should have access to music and given the opportunity to pursue their passion. We are so fortunate to have a driven group of volunteers who also share in our value of spreading the joy of music and this program truly would not be possible without them!"Â
